Earthwaves places an emphasis on long term maintenance programs and a love of building and riding jumps.

We pride ourselves on creating aesthetically pleasing, sustainable bike parks and we aim to work with communities where they are at financially, to slowly improve the park every year the way traditional dirt jumps were intended to be. It is Earthwaves' mission to integrate the culture of BMX trails and dirt jumping into public bike parks in hopes of creating a stronger bike riding community.

            BMX and Dirt Jumping

Freestyle BMX has been added to the Olympics along with Skateboarding and would have had it's debut in 2020 if not for Covid.

If and when the Olympics happen, It is expected that there will be a large demand for BMX facilities. Canada However provides very little for Freestyle BMX riders, as all the public dirt jump parks are geared towards MTB, with more rugged terrain and mellow tabletop jumps. These parks are not fun for BMX and don't provide a platform for athletic excellence, so BMX riders are forced to only ride skateparks or go build their own spots. This is a shame as it was actually BMX Racers that invented dirt jumping and Freestyle BMX itself was born out of Dirt Jumping.

BMX stands for Bicycle Moto Cross and is the predecessor of mountain biking.

BMX riders require smoother surfaces and steeper transitions than mountain bike riders, due to a lack of suspension and smaller wheel base. For this reason Mountain bike built jumps are not very good for BMX. Mountain bike dirt jumpers can still enjoy BMX jumps  but full suspensions with big knobby tires quickly destroy jumps making them no longer fun for BMX and Dirt Jump riders, who have invested in having the proper bike for the style they are riding.

The reason for smaller more simple bikes with less suspension is that freestyle bmx and dirt Jumping places more of an emphasis on performing acrobatic maneuvers in the air.

Smoother jumps with steeper trajectories allow the riders to catch "hang time" which is the point where you stall out in the air at peak like an airplane, becoming weightless for a split second. This allows riders to perform amazing feats and progress to compete on a world stage.

The steeper landings also help to alleviate impact by converting the vertical momentum into horizontal momentum.

They also allow the riders to straighten out easier when they land from performing flips and spins etc. due to the momentum the steeper landing provides along with the gyroscopic effect the bicycle creates at speed to keep the riders balanced upright and more likely to land "tricks" cleanly.

Not everyone can afford a Mountain Bike and BMX is far more accessible to lower income families who can't afford the extremely expensive Mountain bikes, gear or anyway to get up a mountain. When you make a public dirt jump park only fun for mountain biking you are essentially making the park only fun for people with privilege.

By making the jumps smoother with proper transitions, you are allowing more diversity and inclusiveness to happen at the park and allowing riders on both sides to progress to higher levels and reach their full potential.

Earthwaves' goal is to re-establish a platform for BMX Dirt in Canada so that BMX is not pushed aside due to the recent popularity of mountain biking. It is also the goal of The School of Dirt to bring the BMX and MTB dirt jump communities together to allow for the growth of Dirt Jumping as a whole.
